ESSAY

The essay aims to educate an informed, psychologically-minded reader about the two sides of the statement, with a critical evaluation. Your essay should follow the below format:

Introduction – this is a paragraph, possibly two, to orient the reader to the topic. Provide some brief background information, the relevant definitions and scope, and introduce the two sides. You may choose to indicate which side you conclude in favour of, or you can leave it open. A good introduction will tell the reader what to expect; a great introduction will make the reader interested!

Body – The body of your essay will present the arguments and evidence for the affirmative and negative statements, followed by your evaluation of both sides.

Affirmative and Negative arguments – Summarise the arguments for the two sides of the statement. This isn’t a lit review, so don’t get caught up in representing all of the evidence that is available. Think of someone in a debate – what would they say, and what evidence would they choose to use?

Evaluation – This is where you contrast the two sides, and discuss how strong the above arguments are – what are the weaknesses, opposing evidence, missing evidence? Don’t get caught up listing the limitations of single studies – although you can point some out – but focus on the arguments as a whole.

ConclusionA final paragraph summarising each argument and providing your conclusion as to the correct one (or a compromise). Include brief justification as to why you came to that conclusion.

MEDIA COMMUNICATION STATEMENT

The media communication statement is a brief (max one page) written piece suitable for an uninformed lay audience, such as readers of a newspaper or online article. You do not need to use proper paragraphs – it is up to you whether you use short paragraphs, dot points, or some other style. You need to convey two things:

  • A summary of the topic and the two arguments, that allows someone to understand the debate at a brief glance
  • Recommendations for relevant readers (i.e. parents) regarding the outcomes of your chosen topic

References are NOT needed for this statement.

NOTE: The word limit for the essay and media statement combined is 2,500 words. This does not include the reference list.
