Over the course of the semester we have explored various topics in psychology. For this writing assignment, you will be asked to critically think about how mental health diagnoses affect individuals in the “real world.” Mental health disorders are commonly diagnosed together, also known as comorbid diagnosis. Please select two diagnoses (one from each column) from the list provided and discuss the following:

Please select a psychological disorder from the list below and write a paper including (but not limited to) the following items:

  1. Description of each disorder
  2. Causes of each disorder (e.g. psychological factors, sociocultural factors, etc.)
  3. Symptoms (e.g. how many symptoms are necessary to meet the criteria for the disorder, are there different groups/categories of disorders, what do symptoms look like in a person who has both disorder)
  4. The percentage of people who are typically diagnosed with this disorder? Both disorders together?
  5. Treatments for each disorder and if there is treatment which can address both disorders together.
  6. Case study/example of an individual with these disorder (this does NOT need to be a real case, please be creative and make up an example of what these disorders might look like in the real world)
    1. Explain how an individual might present with these comorbid diagnoses
      1. This section should integrate the information gather regarding each disorder and talk about one case which includes BOTH disorders diagnosed in one person (not two separate case examples)
    1. Do not use personal examples
  7. Reasons why these disorders might be diagnosed together

  • You must use at least two outside sources (not including your textbook or Wikipedia. Only one of the resources can be a website/Internet resource
  • You must use APA style (6th edition) in the formatting of your paper (i.e. Times New Roman font 12, double spaced, 1 inch margins).
    • You are required to include references at the end of your paper and within the text. Please include a cover page according to APA style (6th edition).
  • You are not allowed to use direct quotations from any of your references.
    • If you do use direct quotations, significant points will be deducted from your grade.
    • The purpose of this assignment is to summarize and paraphrase the information in your own words.

  1. APA Format: You must follow APA format for this paper. You MUST use scientific sources for this paper. You need at least two sources.
    1. Your textbook does not count as one of these sources, but you can use it as a third source if you desire.
    1. Do NOT use Internet sources.
      1. For example, you may not cite Wikipedia or
    1. I suggest using Oklahoma State University’s library webpage to search for peer-reviewed articles, or to retrieve articles from databases such as PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO.
    1. You can retrieve many peer-reviewed journal articles online using the library’s resources. This is a very effective way to gather information. Note that although you are using the Internet, these are not considered online sources. Instead these are sources from the primary literature, usually academic journals, which you accessed through an online system.


  • Every statement that is not common knowledge must be cited using an APA style in-text citation.
  • DO NOT cite information with direct quotes.
    • Quotes are rarely used in academic writing.
    • Instead of quoting material, paraphrase or summarize other articles.
  • Each source that you cite in-text should also appear in an APA style reference page.
  • Every reference on this page should be cited within the body of your paper.
