Nursing Research – Patient Falls

Patient falls involves unplanned extension to the floor for instance equipment such as trash can be a major cause either with or without damage to the patient and often happens during nursing reporting units (Siela 2015). There are different types of falls and they need to be addressed whether they lead to environmental consequences such as slippery floor or psychological reasons such as fainting.

Patient falls have become one of the greatest problems in health cares as a result of a study conducted by the Agency Health care research in US indicates that approximately one million patients suffer from different falls and approximately 50% of the overall falls lead to injury. On the other hand, the Medicaid and Medicare services as from 2008 have not issued finances to many health centers for extra care required with patient’s falls and the consequences involved with the falls.  Therefore, patient falls remain one of the most patient safety problems underlying health care centers.

Patient falls is one of the neglected and assumed concepts in the health care. For instance Medicaid fails to provide fiancés for extra care on patient falls. On the other hand, patient falls should be avoided for instance introduction of patient falls prevention programs are important.

Two questions related to the question include, quantitative method; what effects does using protocols have on patient falls? And finally, the qualitative method; are patient concerns related to patient falls in the hospital? The nursing protocols have a high impact on patients falls, for instance they are in a position to explain the specific strategies that function effectively in cases of a fall. According to the recent reviews indicate that health care prevention strategies have become effective. Therefore the nursing protocols include specific approaches of reducing the risk occurrences. Patient falls prevention relies on the nursing protocols applied effectively hence, reducing the rate of patient falls. The methods applied in the using protocols include a significant analysis of the environmental and organizational aspects In order to address the overall issue. The methods applied include alert, adult, ill inpatients at risk of falling issued survey that included three single items and four scales and a Comparison made on patient’s perception and nurse’s assessment on the issues of falls.

According to the article the qualitative method indicated that there was a mismatch among the nurses and the patients in the process of evaluating the patients falls (Siela 2015). Having all the participants being at risk of falling and assessment made by two nurses using the assessment tool for fall risk; indicated that approximately half of the participants were in a position to fall. On the other hand, after the enrollment there were no participants who fell as a result of mismatch in the falls assessment between the patients and the nurses. Another significant reason as to why after the enrollment many patients did not fall is because the participants were already aware of the danger (Siela 2015).

Qualitative research has made significant contribution to answering the above questions because through qualitative methods understanding the different implications that underlie patient falls in health care is made clear. On the other hand, they have strived to include different nursing protocols that can be applied in order to prevent patient falls.  Incases of fall risks to patients other patients become concerned on the consequences of the patient falls, the qualitative research method provides a clear indication of the best methods of providing best care to the patients. They provide the significant mechanism of searching for the most effective support interventions, development of effective practices and refining of policies (Grove, Burns &Gray 2013). They generated valuable knowledge on the patient falls prevention. Additionally the qualitative research method provided the empiric knowledge important for the overall patient risks issue which is becoming one of the problems in many heath care centers. Through the representation of the participants, the qualitative research enabled in making effective findings based on the participations of the participants.

Studies with different methods have assisted in enhancing my understanding of the problems and solution to the patients. In this approach they provide different significant aspects towards the reasons as to why the problem occurs and how it can be prevented. The studies have also assisted in making a comparison of different authors on the overall problematic issue and the possible solution. Finally the different methods applied provide significant approach towards clear and possible approaches on the reasons and results of the problem.  Finally the contribution of other methods provides significant approaches that can be applied in order to solve the presented problem

On the qualitative problem a significant question would include, how effective are  the nursing protocols on preventing patient falls since patient falls are becoming an increasing aspect in health care centers and still is their an approach that can be utilized in order to prevent them. Finally, another qualitative problem would include, as a result of the increasing concerns to patient falls in the hospital, are the preventive measures a possibility of reducing the incidences.
