Qing era

At the end of the Qing era most people were educated and had access to foreign materials. Towards the end of the Qing dynasty, there was a boom in number of fiction works. This was influenced by politicization of fiction, translation of western literature and the commercialization of fiction writing. These factors led to the emergence of more fictional works than before. In these last days of the dynasty, fictional works became important. The Qing dynasty had been hit by many rebellions the worst being the Taiping-rebellion of 1851-64. The dynasty was defeated in most of these rebellions, which brought about a cultural and national crisis. The defeat in most of their battles brought about a modern crisis within the dynasty that came with the different invasions.

More people had acquired westernized education, which means that they had been introduced to the western ways of life. The fiction works expressed this and served as an entertainment to the people as well as offering new ways of modernization of the new world. The translation of the western writings and even the establishment of government-sponsored translation houses in the 1860s shows how important the fiction works were in the community. The westernized education created a crisis between the Chinese cultures and the western cultures. The crisis saw a lot of fiction works that tried to address the crisis that was being expieneced.

Fiction was the only way that newspaper houses compensated the authors. The newspaper became popular by the end of the ninetieth century. This is the century that saw the commercialization of fictions. The commercialization of fiction shows that fiction had become an important part of the Qing Dynasty.  The civil-service examination system terminated the professional route that had been used by literati for many centuries. Many of the writers had actually come from literati families nut had started writing fiction because it was the most type of writing during this era.

In order to change the way of thinking of people it important you first change the fiction of those people. The politicization of fiction gave fiction works more importance in the Qing Dynasty. New fiction was seen to be important because it championed for national reforms. This is the reason behind which within the last days of the Qing Dynasty the translation of political views from abroad. This saw a rise in the number of people who tried to write their own fiction stories even if not most of them involved politics. Politicization of the fiction works was what saw the end of the dynasty. This is because people could now express their views on newspapers and the information would reach a lot of people.

The fiction works from the late Qing Dynasty had satirical engagement with the modern society. The fictional work saw the rise of a new era of modernity.  They showed a reaction to the cultural and national crisis of the dynasty. These works are an important part of the Chinese history because they help the modern world to connect between the traditional and modern China. They offered a new dawn of hope to a people who were growing through a crisis of modernity and tradition values.
