Inclusiveness and Productivity in a Hackathon Event

A Hackathon is an event lasting for several days and where different computer programmers collaborates for the purpose of coming up with computer programs (Hezbon, 2014). During the event, the computer programmers usually involve in hardware and software development. The programmers who might collaborate in the event might include the interface designers, project managers and graphic designers. In order for an event such as Hackathon to be inclusive and productive, it must be guided by different principles such as: learning and development, interpersonal communication, flexible work arrangements, performance management, members’ engagement, culture and orientation.  The role of this work is to illustrate how accommodative strategy influence an event’s productivity and inclusiveness.

In order to make the computer engineering event to be productive and inclusive, the members agreed to adopt accommodative strategy in their sessions. The strategy will assist in orientation process of the members in order to have a common objective within the research. Once the members orient themselves, they shall be required to establish a culture of engagement for the purpose of performance management. When it comes to computer programming flexibility at work is of great essence (Hezbon, 2014). Therefore, all the members of the team shall be required to be flexible in their thoughts and actions as things keeps on changing.  During orientation the members agreed to come up with an interpersonal communication which is flexible and accommodative to all. Hence, all the members will be necessitated to communicate with each other efficiently and effectively at all time.

The group solution to the hackathon problem was influenced by my understanding of fairness because by adopting accommodative strategy in ensuring productivity and inclusiveness of the members I was in position to ensure that the cultural, racial and ethnic differences of the members of the group were harmonized and standardized. Each member of the team was necessitated to participate equally in the event despite the race, ethnic group of culture (Hezbon, 2014). Accommodative strategy is of great importance as it eliminated case of discrimination and isolation hence accurate and dependable results from the events. Adoption of accommodative strategy in the hackathon was influenced by my experiences of inclusion and exclusion and creation of fairness in a working environment.

As a matter of fact diversity in terms of cultural, racial and ethnic background in United States has made learning difficult for most students. There has been a division between the black and the white, the Hispanic and the white Americans and students from Asian associated communities (Hezbon, 2014). Therefore, in order to ensure an event such as Hackathon is inclusive and productive it is of great importance to discourage the members of the team from seeing each member of the team as from a given racial, cultural and ethnic background but ensure that they work as a team.  Constructive interactions that have resulted from social networking discussions between people from different ethnic, racial and cultural groups within the United States schooling environment students building trust with one another, engaging their individual culture in learning, ensure that all the students confront social justice and dominance together as one and transform the entire instructional practices. As a matter of fact, diversity in an event like Hackathon can hinder inclusiveness and productivity but working together without considering cultural, racial and ethnic diversity would ensure success.

The experience of inclusiveness and exclusion influenced our decision in eliminating both individualism and heterogeneity because will all agreed to work as a team and to communicate inclusively at all the time (Hezbon, 2014). As a matter of fact, the composition of the group would have influenced the group’s solution to the Hackathon problem because the group members had different knowledge levels, different objectives, were from different cultural background and were of different educational background. Establishment of a united culture and having a similar objective of the event are the major changes which enabled the team to be more innovative and to influence the decisions of the solutions of the problems within the Hackathon. Efficient and effective communication of the teammates from different racial, cultural and ethnic groups would ensure accommodation and inclusive decision making which will result into productive results of the Hackathon.

In conclusion, understanding professional and ethical responsibility would be a great achievement in the field of education (Hezbon, 2014). Most educational organization is composed of students from different racial, cultural and ethnic groups. Therefore, in order to ensure inclusiveness and productivity it is important to be honesty, courteous, faithful, accountable and respectable to all the individuals despite their ethnic, cultural and racial group.  Having these professional and ethical traits will ensure accommodative learning environment, inclusive and productive environment for learning for all the members of the team.
